27 Dec Michael Fridjhon’s Top Choice
A review of Michael Fridjhon’s top scoring wines for 2018
As the year draws to an end, we look back on wonderful wine memories. Making it onto Michael Fridjhon’s list of top scoring wines is definitely a memorable moment, ending the year on a high note.
Every year the Wine Wizard, Michael Fridjhon, publishes a review on some of his highest scoring wines of the year.
Fridjhon describes his selection: “It’s evident that not all of these are cheap and cheerful, but it does suggest you can drink very well without having to take out a mortgage for your Xmas dinner.”
He mentions the 2017 Glen Carlou Quartz Stone Chardonnay as one of the top wines in the Chardonnay category. This year the Chardonnay category was a particularly strong class with higher average scores than all the categories.
This 100% Single Vineyard Chardonnay of which 90% is naturally fermented in water- bent French oak barrels and 10% in a concrete Nomblot Egg, is a beautiful rich wine with an enticing light gold colour. Winemaker Johnnie Calitz describes the aroma and tastes as “tantalising with distinctive fruit notes of citrus, green apple and peach stone fruit. Butterscotch and lime notes on the mid-palate follow through to an extended aftertaste of citrus marmalade with a delicate almond finish.”
Each year this vineyard produces fruit of great depth and concentration and wine of exceptional quality and elegance.
Beyond its classification as one of South Africa’s stand-out Chardonnay’s, the 2017 Quartz Stone Chardonnay was also awarded 92 points by both Master of Wine Tim Atkin and wine critic Neal Martin, as well as obtaining four and a half Platters Stars in the 2019 Wine Guide.
