Our People

A dynamic and highly motivated team contributes to our success. In combining their spirit of freethinking and enterprise with a mutual pursuit of excellence, they shape the distinctive Glen Carlou personality. We take pleasure in introducing some of the main players:

  • Wayne Pitout, Chairman

    Our Chairman leads a board of family and friends who over the years have been united by wine. Wayne's love of wine and the need to follow one's passions resulted in the purchase of Glen Carlou in 2016 with his Pactolus Partners. He spends his time in both the UK and SA, and hopes to use his technological experience to further enhance the company. He is a keen sailor and enjoys travelling with his family.

  • Johan Erasmus, Managing Director

    Having worked for various wine companies around the world, Johan took over the reins of Glen Carlou in May 2009. His passion for people and excellence has seen him steer Glen Carlou through redefining the Company values and business model, as well as improving viticulture and winemaking processes. When the opportunity arises, he heads to the bush in his ‘Landy’ with a fine selection of wines to be opened at appropriate occasions depending on where he is.

  • Johnnie Calitz, Wine Maker

    Born and raised in Calitzdorp, Johnnie grew up on a wine producing farm. In fact, it was his father's attempt at making wine in 2 litre plastic bottles that inspired him to become a winemaker. Having completed harvests in countries around the world, his experience is where he draws inspiration to create the best wines possible. When not doing punch downs in harvest or travelling and sharing the great wines of Glen Carlou, Johnnie enjoys spending time with his beloved family and camping in the great outdoors.

  • Petro Beukes, Financial Manager

    Petro hails from Port Elizabeth. It was only while studying in Stellenbosch that she fell in love with wine, the wine industry and her future winemaker husband. She feels fortunate to utilise her joy of working with numbers in such beautiful surroundings. Outside of work, Petro enjoys hiking and cooking. She loves to travel and explore new countries around the world.

  • Georgina Prout, Communications and Public Relations Manager

    Originally from Australia, Georgie now calls South Africa home. She was called to the wine industry from a young age; she fell in love with the smells of old fortified wine cellars during several memorable family trips to Victoria. She is incredibly passionate about wine, food and people, and feels that with all three combined a day is never boring. She loves to cook and has amassed a library of recipe books.

  • Marius Cloete, Vineyard Manager

    Marius grew up in Kroonstad in the Free State. He ventured down to the Cape and studied at Elsenburg Agricultural College. After farming experiences in England and Worcester, he joined Glen Carlou in 2000. Marius has an incredible knowledge and understanding of the land. He likes nothing better than heading off to the Karoo and become one with nature.

  • Berenice Barker, International Commercial Development Manager

    Having studied and lived abroad for several years, Berenice likes to think of herself as more of an International Citizen, with roots deep in the South African Wine Industry. As a Cape Wine Master, her knowledge and passion for wine is contagious and often generously shared through her lectures at the Cape Wine Academy. Berenice not only fluently speaks wine, but also has a great appreciation for the finer things in life – Whiskey, Jewels, Art and the Theater, all of which are best treasured in the company of good friends.

  • Johan Stander, Head Chef

    Chef Johan first studied teaching. Our bellies are thankful that he was called to the kitchen. After stints in restaurants around Cape Town and the Winelands, he joined us at Glen Carlou in 2012. He is incredibly creative and often challenges our perceptions with his menu descriptions. Classically trained, he is inspired by his mother and grandmother who were both formidable cooks. When he is not standing over a stove he enjoys freshwater fishing, although we never rely on his catch of the day.

  • Lynn Minster, Office Manager & Export Coordinator

    As one of our longest serving team members, Lynn is an encyclopaedia of Glen Carlou knowledge. She spends her days shipping our wines to wine lovers around the world. Outside of work Lynn enjoys the outdoors, beach time in the summer or visiting her local nature reserve with her husband and young daughter. On most Saturdays she does the Park Run with her family, but she is happiest when relaxing at the spa or tending to her garden.

  • Zdeene Cupido, Tasting Room Ambassador

    Zdeene is from Paarl and has been working in the wine industry for the last couple of years. She is passionate about wine and eagerly awaiting your visit to the Tasting Room @ Glen Carlou to welcome you and share her knowledge. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

  • Elize Barnard, Western Cape Regional Sales Manager

    It was only after relocating from Johannesburg to Cape Town that Elize fell in love with wine and the wine industry, dismounting from the pummel horse and her gymnastics coaching career. Elize enjoys working under the backdrop of the impressive Table Mountain, listing our wines in some of the country’s best restaurants. Her fascination and passion for wine is infectious. Outside of work she loves the outdoors and at any opportunity she will be off camping with her family.

  • Meryl Griffiths, KZN Regional Sales Manager

    Our highly respected and experienced KZN Regional Sales Manager, Meryl was born and raised in the Zulu Kingdom. Her experience in pharmaceutical and hospitality sales led her to wine sales and distribution, where she has more than 18 years’ experience. As an ongoing student at the University of Life, Meryl enjoys wining and dining with her family and friends. She enjoys getting lost in novels and spending time with her precious grandson.

  • Pieter Swanepoel, Regional Sales Manager Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State

    It was while studying as a Chef that Pieter’s love affair with wine commenced. He loves it so much he lectures to Cape Wine Academy students and willingly shares his passion at wine tastings and events on a weekly basis. When he is not selling wine, he loves to braai on his Weber. He enjoys camping and has a notable collection of Doc Martins.

  • Heinrich Witbooi, Restaurant Manager

    Born and raised in the Boland, Heinrich has always had a keen interest for food and wine, although sport, such as gymnastics and pole vaulting was his first love. Heinrich’s career in the hospitality industry started out as a casual employment solution, but soon turned into a passion. His enthusiasm, passion and knowledge of the industry is experienced by anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Heinrich. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring new places with his wife and two daughters, while enjoying good food and wine.

  • Lecinda Olivier, Events Manager

    Talk to Lecinda Olivier, our event organiser and your saviour. Whatever the function may be, you will be satisfied with her at the reins. Organised, efficient and incredibly creative, she thrives on the variety of events she coordinates. From corporate functions to weddings and family celebrations, each event has its own unique touches. Lecinda also enjoys spending time with her loved ones and the opportunity to be creative.

  • Jezayne Smith, Warehouse Manager

    Jezayne hails from Robertson where he worked at a winery in logistics. You might remember him as our knowledagble and kind Tasting Room Manager, Jezayne took up the position of Warehouse Manager in December 2018. When he is not studying wine, he enjoys supporting the Stormers Rugby team, playing video games and spending time with friends and family.

  • Phillip Theron, Assistant Winemaker

    A passion for farming, an interest in grapes and the process to get to the end result, led Philip to study Agricultural Management and focus on the wine industry. Glen Carlou is his first permanent position after completing his studies, and he is keen to learn as much as possible under Winemaker, Johnnie Calitz’ tutelage. When not in the cellar, Philip works hard on decreasing his handicap on the golf course. His favourite hole is the 19th with a glass of Chardonnay.

  • Camel Lamprechts, Cellar Foreman

    Camel has been our Cellar Foreman since 1992. While it is the busiest time of the year for him, Camel thrives at harvest time. He enjoys seeing the grapes offloaded into the press and ultimately tasting the wine once it has made it into the bottle. For him, his best way to relax is listening to music and watching a good TV program.

  • Pierre le Riche, Gallery Curator

    Pierre le Riche is a trained visual artist and holds a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art. His practice is a shape-shifting one, and ranges from traditional art-making to commercial collaborations. He sees and approaches exhibitions as conceptualizing and implementing diverse works into a compelling body of artwork. Evident in his first curatorial project for Glen Carlou, Lines of de-Limitation.
