The new ‘self-portrait’ exhibition: SELF, opened in the Gallery @ Glen Carlou on Sunday, the 28th of July.
With ‘selfies’ the new norm, curator Pierre le Riche thought it would be interesting to see how artists would express or interpret themselves if the canvas were to be ‘turned around’. Not often do artists get the opportunity to be the object of their own art form, so Pierre set the challenge and asked 70 South African artists to submit a self-portrait for the exhibition.
The exhibition features artwork by well-known and up-and-coming artists, including writers and a composer. The walls of our impressive 480 sqm gallery are lined with paintings, drawings and photographs, while the installation and sculpture pieces make for a spectacular showcase.
Conrad Botes, Jaco Benadé, Vusi Beauchamp, Deon Maas, Pauline Gutter, Lionel Smit, Selvin November, Ingrid Winterbach, Eben Venter, Johan Stegmann, Simphiwe Buthelezi and Antoni Schonken are amongst the 70 artists on display in this exhibition.
For the first time, the Gallery @ Glen Carlou is hosting an online auction on the Glen Carlou website. The silent auction features three artworks from the SELF exhibition – a painting by Michael Amery and Olivié Keck, respectively and a Carin Dorrington stoneware piece. The auction is live until Sunday the 4th of August at 17h00.
